[Case Study] Shinjuku Flags | Sustainable Art Presentation

Place art that promotes sustainability in a corner of your space.

We were in charge of the display design for the showcase next to the elevator hall at "Flags," a commercial facility adjacent to the southeast exit of Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. This spatial presentation is in keeping with the ethical design initiative being implemented throughout the facility, and is designed to harmonize with the ethical materials used for the interior materials on each floor.

Background

"PANECO®," a recycled board made from crushed discarded clothing, has been adopted as an external material that harmonizes with the fashion floor. Rather than simply displaying the material in the showcase, the material's background and story are conveyed in a way that is unique to Nejiru Furniture.

Specifically, rather than simply displaying the clothing, they used a twisting technique that adds an extra step to the fabric, and reconstructed it as twisted parts. By discussing the colors and movements of the fibers, they created art panels that conveyed the story of the material in a "visible form."

Creating a space that conveys sustainability

This work is not a solitary decoration, but has a facility that communicates to visitors the "background of the material" and the "value of recycling." Nejiru's idea of reconstructing what already exists as new value resonated with the message of ethical manufacturing.
